Ever stared at the tiny icons on your clothing tag and felt like you were trying to crack the Da Vinci Code? You’re not the only one. Those mysterious triangles, circles, and lines aren’t random—they’re a universal laundry language designed to help you take proper care of your garments. And luckily, our fabric care experts at The Steam Shop Glasgow are here to translate it all for you.

If you see a little bucket of water, that’s your washing guide.
Number inside the basin: The maximum wash temperature (e.g. “30” means wash at 30°C).
Hand symbol: Hand wash only — delicate fabrics like silk or wool often require this.
Crossed-out basin: Do not wash. These items should be taken to a dry cleaner.
Pro tip: If you’re not sure, use a gentle cycle and cold water — it’s the safest option.
A simple triangle relates to bleach use.
Empty triangle: Safe to bleach when needed.
Triangle with two diagonal lines: Use non-chlorine bleach only.
Crossed-out triangle: Keep bleach away — it can damage colours or fabrics.
Pro tip: When in doubt, skip bleach. Opt for oxygen-based stain removers instead.
This one tells you if it’s safe to use a tumble dryer.
One dot: Low heat.
Two dots: Medium heat.
Three dots: High heat.
Crossed-out circle: Do not tumble dry.
Pro tip: Air drying helps preserve the shape and life of your clothes — especially knitwear and delicate fabrics.
It looks like an iron (easy enough), but those dots matter:
One dot: Cool iron.
Two dots: Warm iron.
Three dots: Hot iron.
Crossed-out iron: Don’t iron — you’ll risk damage or melting synthetic fibres.
Pro tip: For a professional finish without risk, try our ironing and pressing service — perfect for workwear, dresses, and uniforms.
This symbol is your dry cleaning guide, and the letters inside it (P, F, or W) tell cleaners which solvents are safe.
Empty circle: Dry clean only.
‘P’ or ‘F’: Different solvent types (for professional use).
Crossed-out circle: Do not dry clean.
Pro tip: If you see this symbol, it’s best to leave it to the pros. Our dry cleaning team at The Steam Shop has over 30 years of experience treating everything from suits to wedding dresses with expert care.
Ignoring care labels can lead to:
Shrinking your favourite jumper
Fading colours
Damaged fibres or shape loss
By understanding your garment’s care labels, you extend its life, preserve its quality, and save money in the long run. And if you ever feel unsure, we’ll handle it for you — that’s what we’re here for.
